How to install a Minecraft datapack

Updated

To install a datapack, put its .zip file in your world's datapacks folder (saves/<world>/datapacks in single player, world/datapacks on a server), then run /reload or restart the world.

Steps

  1. Check the version

Datapacks are made for specific Minecraft versions. Check the pack supports yours.

  2. Open the world's datapacks folder

Single player: .minecraft/saves/<world name>/datapacks. Server: world/datapacks next to the server jar.

  3. Add the pack

Copy the .zip in as it is. Only unzip it if the zip contains another folder with pack.mcmeta inside.

  4. Reload

Run /reload, then /datapack list to check it is enabled.

Tips

  • For a new world, click Data Packs on the Create World screen and drag the pack in.
  • Some datapacks come with a resource pack for textures. Install both.

Frequently asked questions

Do datapacks need mods or plugins?

No. Datapacks are part of vanilla Minecraft and work on any server software that loads vanilla data, including Paper.

Why doesn't my datapack show up?

Usually the zip has an extra folder level, so pack.mcmeta isn't at the top, or the pack is for a different version.
